mexico
One of the world’s great civilizations, Mexico offers a blend of Mesoamerican cultures, ancient architecture and culinary traditions, and a deep pride in the richness of its country. Though many tourists flock to the beach resorts of Cancun and Tulum, we encourage you to explore more of Mexico and witness its living history, vibrant costumes and decorations, folkloric dancing, and food culture.
Mexico City will be the first stop for many travelers and is an excellent springboard to other major sites in the region. Float through canals in traditional trajinera boats at Xochimilco while food vendors, artisans and mariachi bands float past. Join a tour and walk the incredible Aztec pyramids of Teotihuacan just 30 miles outside of the capital. Mexico City is also where you will start your culinary tour, with famous restaurants, delightful taco stands and massive food markets such as La Merced. Mexico food culture is not only mouthwatering, but it is also officially recognized as a piece of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
For exuberant fiestas and a look into indigenous traditions that long predate the Spanish Conquest, we highly recommend Oaxaca. This is also one of the best places to celebrate Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead). Families come together, often in colorful costumes, to commemorate relatives who have passed on by creating ofrendas, or altars, with pictures of the deceased, candles, yellow marigold petals, and food. There is not enough room on this page to explain the massive cultural impact Mexico has had on the world, but go for yourself and you will see why it remains such a popular destination for tourists and leader in the Western Hemisphere.
